Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Blue
You have heard of the rhyme. It dates back to the Victorian Era and refers to things Brides should wear on their wedding day to bring a successful marriage. In this moment, it means something a little different for me and I am realizing this age-old proverb can be quite transferrable in meaning.
This morning I was up at 3:33am… If ya’ know, ya know. I couldn't get back to sleep for all the reasons (bathroom break, was hot, restless, my daughter came in…). For whatever reason, I was reflecting on my weekend and the opportunity I had to host a workshop at the Elevate Summit. And for whatever reason, I kept hearing “something borrowed, something blue”… why this all makes complete sense to be revealed momentarily!
I was really proud of myself for upholding my vision. I applied to be a facilitator because I had a story to share. I didn’t want this to be over-planned, over scripted, or “corporate”. I promised myself and my future audience that I would come as Kayla Marlene-Scudera Wight. I brought champagne to celebrate all of our successes and for being in the same rooms together that weekend. To celebrate what we have overcome. And to celebrate what we would share going forward. I also provided them with a journal so they could continue on with their gratitude or hopefully pass it along to someone they felt needed it. If you have made it this far in my blogging journey, you know journaling is by far my favorite.
My fear leading up until the moment it was my turn to speak was that I had nothing original to say. I learned very quickly that my story was fairly aligned with others. What was I going to offer a group of strangers who ultimately have been through the same experiences? I am glad I did the best I could to suppress those thoughts. I rewrote my outline the first night we were there and just hoped for the best, because the clock was a’tickin’! I was very surprised to see 13 women interested in what I had to offer. And those 13 women were exactly who I needed to be in the room with me.
I went up to a table after everyone was clearing out- one woman introduced herself. Another Kayla… and spelled the correct way ; ) She said something really powerful in that moment. I thanked her for telling me I did a good job and said how nervous I was. What I was preaching wasn’t original and in that, everything is basically borrowed. She told me that everything in life is borrowed but my perspective/story is new because it’s mine. Now - let’s talk signs! Kayla has a husband named John (mine is Jason - “J” name), and while she was reading my bio she was either drinking from a lemon mug or looking at something lemon. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
Now, it’s time to break it d o w n…
Something old left me. The last little piece of the old me that needed to be released. I know there were a lot of women there who did just the same, or what they need to let go for their greater good surfaced for them. This was my reminder of what that was for me. My gain outweighs the cost of letting what no longer serves me go. So, arrivederici to the old!
I gained a lot of “new”. Not only did I offer a new perspective to those who attended my workshop, I was able to take in some of their practices and perceptions for what has helped them. I have a new energy, a new revitalization for my passions and drives. Growth isn’t always tangible and I am often the type that if “I don’t see it, I don’t believe it”. Or I measure growth in ways that aren’t always important. I have a clarity that I am growing in the ways I wanted and needed. Also, this was a new experience for me! I stepped out of a place of comfort and did something new.
Again, what Kayla reminded me was that everything is ultimately borrowed. (Geez, Kayla’s are really smart!) I am very adamant of never taking credit for something that isn’t mine. I have been fortunate to have had some wonderful people in my life teach me things that I can now teach others. I am lucky to find the right book, social account, quote, sign, or synchronicity at the most perfect times. And at the end of the day, we all have the same resources - it is just how we apply it. And I hope that I can now be a resource for someone who needs it.
And my favorite alignment of the proverb - blue. The color blue represents so many amazing things. It signifies calmness, truth, divine connection, the heavens, wisdom, and protection. The Throat Chakra is also represented by the color blue. The Throat Chakra (or Vishuddha) is associated with communication, self-expression, and truth. WHHHAAAAT!!! I mean… come on! *queue the goosebumps*
The last part to the rhyme is not as prominent - “and a sixpence in your shoe”. Trusting that my good fortune and prosperity; the life I want to manifest - it is already mine. I was there as a facilitator for a reason. Only good things are coming from that trajectory. And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Brittnea Bryden-Stevens. To be on this journey with her means so much to me! I am a richer person because of our friendship, kinship, and literally how can you not love someone more after doing the Cupid Shuffle (ab-workout version*) balancing on the bed! I respectfully have to let all of the women who did NOT attend Brittnea’s Rev+ Flo Sunday morning - that you really missed out. Brittnea is that person who will always make you want to be a better, healthier version of yourself: mind, body, and soul. *If you want to know that this means, you need to follow the Be Well With Britt Facebook page or attend an in-person class!
A lot of women I know who were not able to attend the summit asked if my workshop would be recorded. The recording was something we were responsible for on our own and unfortunately it wasn't a financial investment I could make at this time. SO, I thought let me do what I do best… I will summarize my workshop “Power in the Pause: Trusting the Space Between” in next week’s blog post. Although, if you start from blog #1 and follow along, it’s essentially what I covered. And hopefully some of the women who attended my workshop wanted more detail and they found it here!
See you next Tuesday : ) Love yous guys! xoxo
